Mahabharat (1988) is one of India's most successful television series and was based on the Hindu epic, The Mahabharata - one of the most sacred religious texts of the Hindus. This made-for-TV, 94-episode Hindi series debuted on Indian terrestrial television - Doordarshan or DD-National in 1988 and ran for two successful years. The series was produced and directed by the famed duo of India's cinema world B R Chopra and Ravi Chopra, known for making grand and sweeping romantic Bollywood films. The series stars Nitish Bharadwaj and Puneet Issar, among a host of stalwart television and movie personalities.
