Synopsis

Komal Kumar (Manja) is an aspiring film writer. He keeps gate-crashing film-sets with the hope that some director or the other will approve his script. The script is based on the incidents that have taken place in his life. His mother is the servant in a rich man?s (Ramesh Bhat) home. Komal and Indira (Aishwarya Nag), the rich man?s daughter are in love. His mother says that the romance cannot possibly work out, and Indira?s father is absolutely furious, and tells Manja that he must write love-letters to an imaginary person, at an imaginary village, and give them to Indira to post, so that she thinks he is in love with someone else. He picks the name Vasumati, and Indira?s father makes up the name of the village. He writes to the imaginary Vasumati, saying that he fell in love with her when he first saw her.

A girl is seen about to hang herself, with the noose in front of her, when the post arrives. She comes down, and goes to get the letter, which is addressed to her: for she is Vasumati (Udhayathara), and she really exists, and the address is not imaginary. She tells her girl-friend about the letters.

Indira?s father tells Manja to write several letters, and eventually a letter saying he will meet her at the bus-station, and they will go away together, to Bangalore. He gives Komal two bus-tickets in the name of Komal and Vasumati.

Indira (Aishwarya Nag), the rich man?s daughter has fallen in love with Manja. Indira's father is absolutely furious, but Manja says he does not want to marry Indira and be a cook in their house, but rather he wants to become a film-director. Indira?s father tells Manja that he must write love-letters to an imaginary person, at an imaginary village, and give them to Indira to post, so that she will read them, and think he is in love with someone else.

He gives Manja two bus-tickets in the name of Manja and Vasumati.

Vasumati arrives at the bus-station, but there is no sign of Manja. The bus is due to leave, but she pleads with the driver to wait. The driver is encouraged to wait by a passenger, "Master" (Thriller Manju) on the bus, who is a cinema action director, who has a frequently repeated dialogue, "I hate love stories". However, eventually the bus leaves, just as Manja arrives ? it stops, they both get on, and of course, Manja is unaware of who Vasumati is. She is puzzled as to why he does not acknowledge her.

Master, who has worked out how Vasumati has come, and who wants to help her, takes them both to see the same director (Guruprasad) who threw Manja of his film-set previously, and Manja tells more or less the same story, which the director doesn?t like. Then Vasumati, who has introduced herself as Suma, tells her story. She was the only daughter of rich parents, and grew up like a queen. Her father died when she was young, and then her mother was pushed into the well by a relative, and she drowned. She then stayed with her grandparents, but the relatives wanted her money and property ? so they accused her of killing her mother, said she was possessed by evil spirits, mistreated her and had a "swami" come to exorcise the spirits. However, they have to keep her alive, because the terms of her parents? will state that if she dies, the entire property is to be given to an orphanage. They then wanted to marry her to Arvind, another family member, whom she dislikes, and whom she knows will ill-treat her. It was at this point that Manja?s first letter arrived.

The director thinks this story of Vasumati is marvellous, and agrees to make the film. Manja thanks Suma, and asks if they can be partners in film script-writing. She is about to tell him who she really is, with the letters in her hand, when a car pulls up outside. It is his bet friend, Putta (Sharan), who has told Indira of her father?s duplicity, and he has brought Indira with him, who loves Manja.

This adds to the plot ? the director says to Manja, "one of the girls has to commit suicide as the climax to the film ? you have to decide which one."

The film?s not over yet, there?s 59 minutes to go! The romance situation has to be sorted out: so too do all the problems with Vasumati?s family, which involves a hilarious sequence in which the Master and the rest of the film crew, whose work Manja interrupted, use all the cinematic tricks imaginable, to make Vasumati?s family think that the property which Vasumati owns is haunted. There are several twists in the story, before the ending of the film.

Review

I am aware that this film did not do well at the Box Office, but I really enjoyed it, and I believe it was well received on TV. The story is very ingenious, and the film starts as a drama, with comedy overtones, then we see another story which is also a drama ? the story of Vasumati. Then the film develops into an unusual love story which becomes a love triangle, then we see hilarious comedy, and finally an unusual ending. Komal Kumar is delightful as Manja, the rather simple and na?ve would-be script-writer and director. His characterisation is just right. Thriller Manju, as "Master" who says he hates love stories is delightful as someone who is trying to bring Manja and Vasumati together. Aishwarya Nag and Udhayathara are just right as the two girls who are in love with Manja, and Ramesh Bhat is good as always. Guruprasad and the entire film-crew that are working on the film that Manja interrupts are also good. The songs are good, with two love songs at the beginning, then three comedy songs. In fact this is a film that has a little of everything, and is well worth watching.
