Synopsis
"Hudugru" is a story of three youths. ? Prabhu (Puneeth Rajakumar) is aspiring for government job, and awaiting interview. Chandru (Srinagara Kitty) is trying to get a loan, as he wants to open a computer centre: he and Pavitra (Abhinaya), Prabhu?s sister, are in love with each other. Siddesh (Yogesh) wants to settle in Dubai. Prabhu and Gayathri (Radhika Pandit) are in love with each other, but her father will not let them marry unless and until Prabhu has a Government job.
Sudhir (Vishal Hegde),, who has just qualified as a lawyer, and is a best friend of Prabhu tries to commit suicide, by drowning himself, but he is rescued. He tells Prabhu that he is in love with Sushma (Ramya Barna), and that she cannot live without him: but her wealthy, powerful and dangerous father disapproves, and is having her married to a rich man?s son. Sudhir?s mother was an MP, and she wants him to marry someone else. Prabhu says that he and his friends will kidnap Sushma, and take her with Sudhir to be married. They are aided by a friend (Rangayana Raghu) who works as a waiter in a snack-bar. He meets Sushma, and asks if she is really in love with Sudhir. She says she is, and that she will die without him. They kidnap Sushma, and send her with Sudhir to a safe destination, with another friend to look after them ? but at considerable personal cost. They are arrested ? which means Prabhu will never get a Government job if he is charged. Siddesh is struck on the head, and becomes completely deaf, and is thrown out of his home by his father, when he finally returns there. A lorry runs over Chandru?s leg, and he has to have it amputated below the knee. However, Prabhu phones the friend looking after Sudhir and Sushma, and finds that they are blissfully happy.
Then Prabhu and his friends discover that Sudhir and Sushma have split up. They are horrified, and go to see them at their respective homes. But they want nothing to do with each other, now the novelty of their love has worn off, and Sushma expects to live the rich lifestyle to which she is accustomed. The trio of friends are very angry, and they decide to kill Sudhir and Sushma. They kidnap them and bring them together. Prabhu tells them that if they give up, people will stop supporting love. "Why do you think your parents are against love", he asks them, "because you give up in the end. Prove yourselves by living together. They will honour you. Otherwise you?ll get divorced and marry someone else, and if you don?t like that person, you?ll get divorced again and marry someone else. You should be ashamed of yourselves."

Review
This is an excellent film. Indian Film Makers are very socially responsible, because from time to time they make films which are not the usual masala entertainer, but deal with social issues. This is one such film. I gather this film was well received, when it was first released. There are many films which have stories of couples who are in love, and are united against the wishes of their parents, who usually finally agree with the couple and welcome them back into the family. And everyone lives happily ever after. This is not such a story, for the couple, who have been united as a result of great sacrifices made by those that helped them unite, get fed-up with each other, after a short time together, and want to divorce. Does this happen? I am sure it does. The named characters in the synopsis are all good in their roles, and Rangayana Raghu, who is so good I comedy roles, this time plays a straight role, a part that is not written as comedy, a part to which he gives his special magic! The songs are good, "Yen chandane hudugi" is at the Mela, always a popular song location in Indian films. The Item Song "Naa board irada bus" brings some light relief early in the film, before the serious drama that is to follow, and "Neerinalli sanna ale" of which we hear two versions, tells Prabhu?s love-story in a delightful way. Watch this film thoughtfully, the story is very well told, directed, acted and filmed. It is not a pleasant story, but it is a story that should be told.
