Plot

Three friends Ganesh (Ganesh), Diganth (Diganth) and Kitty (Rajesh Krishnan) goes to Mugilupete for a vacation. Ganesh falls in love with Sowmya (Daisy Bopanna), a widow, staying with her in-laws Kodandaram (Anant Nag) and Padma (Padmaja Rao) while Diganth and Kitty fall for Kodandaram's daughters Radha (Neethoo) and Pavani (Bhavana Rao) respectively. While Diganth-Neethoo and Kitty-Pavani get the green signal for marriage, Sowmya is hesitant to accept Ganesh as her life partner. The director shows how Ganesh wins her heart, in a unique way.
The 'talkative' Ganesh is impressive with his body language, dialogue delivery and expressions. Diganth has a very good facial expression and leaves a strong impression. Rajesh Krishnan does justice to his role.

Neethoo, Bhavana Rao, Daisy Bopanna perform well. Anant Nag is at his best. But, it is Rathnavelu who walks away with all the honours for his brilliant handling of the camera.

Synopsis

This film was shot in the magnificent scenery of Karnataka, at Mandalapatti in Coorg, the Kodachadri Hills in western ghats and the Shivanasamudra waterfalls in Mandya district (Gaganachukki and Bharachukki Falls).
There are three friends Ganesh (Ganesh), whose father Bhairae Gowdaa (Rangayana Raghu) is an MLA: Diganth (Diganth), studying to be a doctor: and Kitty (Rajesh Krishnan), studying to be an engineer, whose girlfriend had left him a year before, after eight years of friendship. They are typical young lads – they go out drinking and meeting the city girls in bars at night. One night Kitti crashes the car as he is drunk.
For a change, Diganth suggests they go to his grandfather’s house in Mugilupete for a break (he tells them he hasn’t been there since his grandmother’s death). There they meet a servant who is deaf and dumb, but who plays the flute. Ganesh christens him Dracula! They met the grandfather, who lives with Kodandaram (Anant Nag) and Padma (Padmaja Rao), and their two daughters, Radha (Neetu), who is doing a course in Ayurvedic medicine and Pavani (Bhavana Rao), whom her mother is always beating, she regards Pavani as a monkey, as she is accident prone, extremely careless, and also always up to mischief. We see Pavani’s madness, as soon as the boys arrive, because she runs into Diganth in the car, and carries him on the bonnet, dropping him into the herb-garden where Radha is working. Later, when she is serving food at the table, she empties a ladle-full of food on Ganesh’s head!
In addition there is Saumya (Daisy Bopanna) a gold medallist who teaches the local children, whom they regard as a daughter. She had married their son, Srinivas, two years before: they had grown up together, and were in love. They were married, but on the day of their marriage, Srinivas lost his life trying to save a child from drowning, just two hours after they were married. Ganesh at first teases and makes fun of Saumya, until he hears her story.
Kodandaram is unable to walk since a hunting accident two years before, when he was after a wild boar. He still yearns to hunt and shoot the wild boar responsible for putting him in a wheelchair, and the boys decide to help him, much to the annoyance of Padma, his wife.
Diganth falls in love with Radha, Kitti with Pavani, and Ganesh with Saumya, but she has always refused to consider remarriage, despite the persuasions of Kodandaram and Padma. The rest of the film shows how the love stories progress.
Will the three boys be successful in wooing the three girls? Why is the title “Gaalipata”, which means a kite? Watch the film to find out!

Review

This film is called “Gaalipata”, meaning “Kite”. Kite-flying is very important in India – kite flying competitions are popular. “Uttarayan” is an International Festival of Kites, held in Gujarat, on 14th January each year, and there is a two day public holiday in India to celebrate it.
“Aakasha ishteyakideyo” introduces the three lads flying a kite in a stadium, and goes on to show their life-style. “Minchaagi neenu” is a love-song featuring Ganesh and Saumya, filmed in a variety of outdoor locations. “Nadheem dheem thana” is a love-song with Pavani and Kitti and a large group of male and female dancers, in exotic costumes, and beautiful outdoor locations. “Aha ee bedaru” is a love-song with Diganth and Radha, and some female dancers. “Kavithe kavithe” and “Onde samane” are song fragments featuring Ganesh. The melodies and lyrics are lovely, and the costumes, picturisation and choreography are superb.
The story is well-told, and well acted by the entire cast – and well filmed in beautiful scenery. It is a story of people seeking happiness, the three lads, Ganesh’s parents, the three girls and their parents, and Grandfather, who wants to see everyone happy. It is a good family entertainer.
